The Poynter Institute, Copy Editor/Writer, June 2007 – Present

(Came to Poynter for its six-week summer fellowship for young journalists in 2007 and was selected as the one fellow to stay for a year-long fellowship. Hired full-time thereafter as a copy editor & writer. Also freelanced for the St. Petersburg Times during year-long fellowship.)
•    Produce and edit several Poynter Online columns, including Al Tompkins’ “Morning Meeting,” Joe Grimm’s “Ask the Recruiter” and “E-Media Tidbits.”
•    Edit News University courses and Webinars, as well as marketing materials for the institute.
•    Work with faculty members and contributing writers to formulate story ideas.
•    Created a diversity blog for Poynter Online (www.poynter.org/diversityatwork) to help enhance journalists’ coverage of diversity-related issues.
•    Moderate live chats with prominent journalists and educators for Poynter Online.

The Dallas Morning News, Intern/Correspondent, Summer 2008
Developed story ideas, wrote articles and produced multimedia for the Morning News’ arts & entertainment and health sections. Broke stories about financial difficulties the city’s premiere ballet company faced, and uncovered where the money had been spent.

The Boston Globe, Correspondent, Summer 2006
Wrote eight news briefs and two stories a week, covering four suburbs of Boston. Found stories about environmental issues and problems with Medicare’s prescription drug plan.

The Lowell Sun, Correspondent, Summer 2006
Covered several cultural events, requiring an understanding of Lowell’s minority populations. Conducted interviews in Spanish while covering the Hispanic community.

Rhode Island Monthly Magazine, Intern/Correspondent, Summer 2006
Utilized alternative story forms, including a piece about the “Top 10 Toys” of the holiday season. Performed online research, edited and fact-checked stories.

Worcester Telegram & Gazette, Intern/Correspondent,
May 2005 – Jan. 2006
Wrote one to two breaking news stories a day. Reported stories for New England Cable Network’s “Talk of the Telegram” segment, broadcasted in Central Massachusetts.

Covered town government/general assignments for daily paper and five weeklies. Created and wrote a weekly summer series profiling local gardeners.
